Inspire solutions.
Our mission is to create empowering Black media representation.
The Chance is a Black-owned media startup dedicated to Black and Afro-diasporic Millennials in Europe. We challenge media stereotypes by producing inspiring journalistic stories in innovative formats, such as animation films. With a focus on solution journalism, we aim to provide empowering Black media representation, showcasing strategies and solutions for Black communities on both small and large scales. Our prototype, blackcitystories.org, received the Stars for Media Diversity award in 2020.

-
Solution JournalismWe highlight effective solutions for challenges faced by Black communities in Europe, following the four pillars of solution journalism: Response to a social problem, detailing steps to the outcome. Evidence of impact. Identification of limitations and barriers. Insights for application in other contexts. While distinguishing genuine Solution Journalism from impostors like Hero Worship, we do feature in our dedicated portrait series inspiring Black trailblazers whose journeys can empower others in Europe.
-
IndependenceOur newsroom maintains full editorial independence. We accept funding only from sources aligned with our journalistic goals, without allowing influence from donors, sponsors, or advertisers. We do not pay sources for information, preserving our integrity and the accuracy of our reporting.
-
Truth and AccuracyWe are committed to rigorous research and fact-checking for truthful and accurate reporting. We scrutinize every piece of information and verify facts before publication. If mistakes occur, we correct them promptly and inform our audience transparently.
-
Transparency and TrustWe identify ourselves as journalists when seeking interviews and disclose our sources unless anonymity is essential. We protect the confidentiality of anonymous sources and manage their information securely, maintaining transparency within our team and for our audience.
-
Responsibility (Minimizing Harm)We consider the impact of our reporting on individuals and protect vulnerable sources. We provide detailed information about the journalism process, allow sources to make informed decisions, and offer them the chance to review their contributions before publication, ensuring their comfort and consent.
-
Fairness and BalanceWe strive for balanced coverage, giving individuals the opportunity to respond to negative portrayals. We make timely efforts to contact them and explain our attempts if unsuccessful. We verify and validate data sets before publication, explaining how to correct inaccuracies transparently.
-
Respect and Fair PayWe provide fair and competitive compensation, oppose precarious work conditions, and offer flexible work options. We value work/life balance and mental health, understanding that a balanced and healthy team is crucial for quality journalism.
-
Financial TransparencyWe are committed to financial transparency, making our values, policies, and major financial supporters publicly accessible.
